L'intrados de la façade courbe de l’église San Stefano Rotondo à Rome est revêtu d'une série de fresques peintes par Niccolò Circignani en 1583 qui représentent les supplices infligés aux premiers chrétiens par les empereurs romains. Ces fresques disposées sur le bord continu du bâtiment à plan circulaire viennent en amplifier l'effet architectural, et dissuadent les fidèles de détourner leur attention de l'autel central.
Les scènes peintes sont très crues, et ont la particularité d'être annotées et légendées afin que le spectateur ne perde rien des tortures décrites à chaque plan du tableau. Réduites à leur plus pure expression pour ce projet, telles des notes en bas de page, elles n'en restent pas moins terrifiantes et intemporelles.
